I AM MOTHER

By Askiah Adam

I am mother hear me roar as if thunder before a downpour
To signal to those who dare to scare
The ones I love so totally, now and forever more

I am mother hear me sing as if angels are in the wings, singing
a chorus to bring sleep, so deep
to little tired eyes and their little souls to keep.
For, tomorrow is another day full of cheer, love and care
From mummy, daddy and everyone there

I am mother hear me cry, copious tears from my eyes
Whenever my children go awry
Asking God, "oh why, oh why?" He did not try
To keep them safe, to give them faith, to know the ties
that bind all to both earth and sky.

I am mother hear me laugh, full of mirth, joy and pride
Every time my children do alright
Their first steps, their first words and how they enjoyed a first ride
On horses, buses, buggies and bikes
It warms my heart and makes me bright
Oh life is so very right

I am mother hear me sigh when everyone is fast asleep
I've worked, I've cooked, I've washed and cleaned
No time, no space, not for myself and so I weep
I scream and shout at a world so mean
Why must mothers just cook and clean?

Fathers they come home from work, feet up waiting to be fed
Children love them I don't know why
When all they do is play
then its off to bed
it is always about the next day.
If mother's sad, oh that's just too bad.
